Paige was laughing at me, but I got it to fit. Maybe now wouldn't be a good time to mention my new scarf I got in Paris, but isn't it pretty? First we set off for La Sagrada Familia a church designed by Gaudi. Upon exciting the metro we all groaned about how it was under construction and wish we had come when it wasn't... Little did we know this church is still a work in progress! It's only 60% done!
Still worth seeing. It was cool because the inside was so modern. Very open and uncluttered. I could write pages about all that I learned from the video we watched in the accompanying museum about where he got his inspiration from and his goals for the design, but you have to see it in person to understand.
The stain glass was awesome!
The outside was more detailed then the inside!
Especially right above the doorway.
I know the lighting isn't great and I definitely got better ones on my camera!
We decided to make the whole day Gaudi themed and went over to park guell. Compared to the other cities it seems crazy that we're only seeing two major sites in one day, but according to our travel books Barcelona didn't even become a tourist destination until 1992 because of the Olympics. It's a very young city and attracts young people, young style and night life only the young can manage to maintain. Barcelona also didn't realize its beach revenue pontenial until then and as part of the preparation for the Olympics they dumped tons of white sand on their beaches to make them look the way they do today (we plan on heading down there tomorrow). But back to the park. Best views of the city! First we thought this was a great view.
Then we found this view!
Only to finally get trumped by this view!
I got some awesome panoramas of all of Barcelona. By then we were tired and ready for siesta or in Paige's case another Skype interview (you go girl!). All the altered meal times (lunch at 2pm dinner at 10pm) had me so messed up and we had made a plan to meet two girls from UVA for tapas at El Callejon at 10:30pm so I picked up a little snack to tide me over.
My throat was starting to hurt a little, but I brushed it off and got ready for the evening (without my phone). It was fun to get to know Maggie and Sarah-Wynne and the tapas were so good. It was fun because there were 5 of us and 12 options so we ordered all but two and shared them all, along with two pitchers of sangria and 3 desserts. After that we went to Club Opium, a famous beach club. We were able to get in free of a cover fee because we said we were on Michael Jordan's guest list (a guess a big promoter is Barcelona). I got that tip from a high school friend named Jason who studied abroad in Barcelona. The club we really fun and we even got into a VIP section because Paige befriended one of the boys in it. With dinner at 10:45pm and not getting to the club till 2:00pm, we didn't leave until 5am! By the time I got in bed the sun was raising.
Good thing siestas are an everyday thing here.
